If you would like to climb only one of them: Sajama 4 days  Acotango 2 days  Climbing the Acotango Volcano (6052m.).   It is a volcano located on the border between Chile and Bolivia in the Western Cordillera. Acotango is one of the Quimsachatas, meaning “Three twins” in Aymara. and Sajama 6542 meters, Sajama is the highest mountain in Bolivia and the crowning peak of the Cordillera Occidental. Both Mountains  can be climbed from Sajama National Park,  The área of Sajama national park is known  too, for its unique high desert flora and fauna (wildlife), such us llamas, vicuñas, alpacas, pink flamingos.  Including forests  featuring quenua trees.    And also the área is    volcanoes and geothermal features. For that reason, on the área there are Geysers,  natural hot springs to enjoy. Acotango It is the most accessible 6000 summit in Bolivia. It offers a non-technical ascent, a great option to introduce into high-altitude mountaineering, also for acclimatization. Sajama is a great option for who is expecting a thrillling experience and challenging. The ascending to Sajama is quite difficult. because  its high altitude, cold and some times a lot of wind, also we find on route some very steep sections, which makes more challenging the climb.

Physical Requirements

Climbing Nevado Sajama is very physically demanding, as the high altitude. And strong wind. Also as it is volcanic peak the air  that we breathe is dry. For that reason is recommended for who will climb it. Has a very high level of fitness and acclimatization,  becasuse it will make the climb easier and more enjoyable.

Weather Conditions

As its extremely high altitude  and being high up in the Andes, it is constantly cold all year round, with temperatures dropping below 0 degrees celsius.

Best season to climb 

The best season to climb sajama is between May and October, as this is the dry season in Bolivia, and will ensure optimal climbing conditions. Where does the trip to go up to Climbing the Acotango Volcano and Sajama start from? Generally the trips to Climb the Acotango and Sajama start from the city of La Paz – Bolivia. Because you can easily reach the city of La Paz – Bolivia by plane, also take advantage of the mountains of the Cordillera Real to practice and acclimatize.

ITINERARY:

    LA PAZ (11,810 ft./3600 m). – SAJAMA VILLAGE (13,779 ft./ 4200m.)

    Climbing the Acotango Volcano (6052m.).  starts at 9:00 am  from La Paz - Bolivia, departure crossing the Altiplano to get Sajama village.
    On the way we will visit the funerary towers of ancient cultures, these are called "CHULLPAS" in the afternoon we will have a visited the geysers, on our way we can observe the typical Andean fauna of the place such as the Andean camelids, Alpacas, llamas and Vicuñas.
    Dinner and overnight in the town of Sajama (13,779 ft./ 4200m.) . ( Hostels with private bathrooms).

    SAJAMA VILLAGE (13,779 ft./ 4200m.) – ACOTANGO SUMMIT (19,855 ft. / 6052m.) - SAJAMA VILLAGE (13,779 ft./ 4200m.)

    Around 2:00 a.m., we will depart from Sajama village in a 4WD vehicle, heading toward  at (5,500 m. / 18,044 ft). From there, we will begin a gradual ascent toward the summit. The climb typically takes 3 to 4 hours and is considered relatively easy. Depending on the season, we may encounter snow or ice along the route. At the end of the dry season, it is sometimes possible to reach the summit without the need of crampons.

    From the summit at  (6,052m. /19,855 ft), we’ll enjoy breathtaking panoramic views before beginning our descent back, which takes approximately 2 hours.
    There may be an option to descend via a different, route. Once at (5,500 m. / 18,044 ft)., our vehicle will bring us back to Sajama village, We then make our way to the nearby hot springs to unwind and enjoy a well-earned rest.

    SAJAMA VILLAGE (13,779 ft./ 4200m.)

    On this day, we’ll have a free morning to rest or explore at your own pace. In the afternoon, we’ll visit the geysers, where you can witness impressive steam vents and bubbling geothermal activity in a stunning high-altitude setting.

    SAJAMA VILLAGE (13,779 ft./ 4200m.) – HIGH CAMP OF SAJAMA (18,700 ft. / 5700m.)

    After having breakfast 7:30 am we will take a car 4WD towards (4800m. / 15,748 ft), from there we will hike up to high camp of Sajama (5700m. / 18,700ft).  About 6 hours hike over sand and scree. At High Camp we will set up our tents, have dinner, then sleep at tents.

    HIGH CAMP OF SAJAMA (18,700 ft. / 5700m.) - ASCEND TO SAJAMA SUMMIT (21,325 ft./ 6500m.) –SAJAMA TOWN (13,779 ft. / 4200m.)

    Our summit day begins very early, around 2:00 a.m. We'll wake up in the early morning hours to get dressed in our climbing gear and enjoy a light breakfast before starting the ascent.

    Once ready, we’ll begin our climb toward the summit. Along the way, we’ll take short breaks to rest, hydrate, and snack on chocolate for energy. The route takes us through sections of loose scree before reaching the glacier, where we may encounter stretches of penitentes — dramatic ice formations common at high altitudes.

    At the summit, we’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the Altiplano, the Cordillera Occidental, and the nearby twin peaks of Parinacota and Pomerape — all illuminated by the unique colors of an Andean sunrise.

    The descent back to High Camp takes approximately 3 hours. Once there, we’ll have soup and hot drinks to recover. After repacking our gear, we continue down to base camp, where a 4WD vehicle will be waiting to take us back to Sajama village. To end the day, we’ll relax in the nearby hot springs and spend the night at a local hostel.

    SAJAMA VILLAGE (13,779 ft./ 4200m.) - LA PAZ (11,810 ft./3600 m).

    After breakfast, we will carefully organize and pack our personal belongings, ensuring nothing is left behind. Once everything is ready, we’ll say our farewells to the mountain that has been our companion throughout the adventure. Then, we will begin our journey back to the city of La Paz.

    We expect to arrive in La Paz around 4:00 p.m.

To sleep:

  • Sleeping Bag (–15°C to –20°C rating): A high-quality, cold-weather sleeping bag designed to keep you warm during the night.

Backpacks:

  • Daypack (35 liters) – for summit day.
  • Bagpack (55 - 70 liters) – used at from Base Camp To High Camp. (If you here your own personal porter, you can use a backpack or duffel bag for the porter to carry).

Headwear:

  • Beanie – should be warm, breathable, and moisture-wicking, made from materials like merino wool or synthetics to keep your head and ears insulated and dry in cold, high-altitude conditions.
  • Buff - A must-have for all outdoor activities
  • Sun Hat - Any style of lightweight hat for shading the head will work well
  • Sunglasses – with strong UV protection
  • Headlamp –A modern outdoor LED headlamp offering 200-300 lumens of output.

    • We Recommend to bring your own muntaineering boots, because as you’re already accustomed on them and they will be more comfortable during the climb.

CONDITIONS OF CONTRACT:

The mountaineering and hiking tours that we offer are highly risky, the customers decides to take the tour with their own experience and travel under our conditions.

1.-  Confirmation and payment:    

  • After confirming the tour with payment
  • The confirmation is  valid for the date and time indicated on it.
  • The customer is responsible for the tour and must prevent factors that can make themselves sick or injure
  • that can cause to loss the trip

2.-  Tour cancellations :

  • 12 days  before trip day  30% penalty from total price.
  • 7 days  before trip day  45% penalty from total price,
  • a day  before trip day    60% penalty from total price,
  • on  departure  day    100% penalty from total price,

3.-  Postponements:

  • 7 days or more  before the tour day  30% penalty from total price,
  • A day  before tour day  40% penalty from total price,
  • on  departure  day    100% penalty from total price

5.- Insurance:

  • The customer will make the tour on his/her own and full responsibility.
  • The price does not include travel insurance against accident, life and medical expenses of any kind.

8.- Climatological Factors:

  • The customer is responsible for choosing his/her travel date.  If, because of bad weather, the tour can not be completed. there is not refund.

9.- Equipment losses or damages during the tour:

  • The customer is responsible for taking care of all the equipment that we provide. In case of damages or losses of any of the gear, the customer must pay for it at the end of the tour.
