Climbing Pequeno Alpamayo 5350m & Huayna Potosi 6088m. – 7 Days

This tour allows you to reach the summit of 2 beautiful mountains on Royal Range one of them is the Pequeño Alpamayo 5430m. / 17.814 ft   and another one  is Huayna Potosí 6.088 m / 19,973 ft.

We begin with a short trek on day one up to 4,700m.  then on day 2 walk up to Pico Austria 5.350 m. /  17.552ft  from there appreciating an incredible 360 ​​degree view. The highlight is the condoriri mountain in its shape of a condor with open wings. After day the tree will continue with the ascent to the Pequeño Alpamayo mountain 5.430m. . / 17.814 ft

Pequeno Alpamayo 5430m. is very easy to climb up to Pico Tarija (5.330 m / 17.486ft. ). Then, you’ve got to go down to the rock before climbing 100m of inclined slope at 50 / 55º to reach the summit.

Days four and five hiking towards Base Camp of Huayna Potosi. Day six ascend to High Camp day seven summit attempt of Huayna Potosi 6088m.  and Back to La Paz.

Climbing Huayna Potosí 6.088m is Bolivia ’s most popular major peak in the Cordillera Real. Located at just 25 km from the city of La Paz,  Huayna Potosi is known for its ease of access and imposing beauty as well as the fact that it is 88 meters over the magic 6.000 meter figure. Huayna Potosi can be climbed by beginners with a competent guide and technical equipment. Beginners yes, but fit beginners; it’s quite steep toward the end and it’s a tough climb, but well worth the effort!

Itinerary

 

9:30 am Peak up  from  town of Copacabana (3841m. / 12601 ft). From there we will continue by road to Rinconada, the gateway to the Condoriri group of mountains. Donkeys will be loaded with our gear and we’ll trek about an hour and a half to two hours to reach Laguna Chiar Khota (Black Lake) and its beautiful views of the cluster of thirteen peaks known as the Condoriri group. This will be where we will establish our base camp Overnight at Condoriri Base Camp (15,420 ft./ 4700 m).

We will have breakfast at 8:00a, then at 9:00 am we Will walk up to Pico Austria 3 hours hiking.

from Autria peak (5350m. /17522ft)    , we can see the entire shape of the Mountain Condoriri,(shape of a Condor with its wings spread wide), Lake Titicaca, the west face of Huayna Potosi, and numerous other peaks of the Cordillera Real. Later we descend in one houur to Chiakhota  lagoon 4700 m.  / 15419ft. . we will set up our camp, at the lagoon shore.

1:30 am Wake up, breakfast, and preparation with climbing equipment.
2:30 am Ascent 5 to 6 hours to the top, we start on a fairly flat road until we reach the ice and snow of the glacier. We continue climbing up slopes of up to 30 degrees until we reach Pico Tarija (17,388 ft./5,300 m).

After Pico Tarija, we climb the two most difficult slopes with an incline of 45 to 50 degrees for 60 meters and 40 meters respectively.

Approximately 8:00 am, After the last steep section, we reach the summit of Pequeño Alpamayo (17,814 ft./5430 m) where we can appreciate the view of the Andean highlands, the Cordillera Real and the subtropics. We stayed on the summit long enough to enjoy the view and take photos.
The descent to the base camp will take approximately 3 hours.

At the base camp we will eat and rest, later have dinner and sleep.

On this day from Chiar Khota Lagoon 4700 m.  / 15419ft. . After the breakfast we go direction to  Maria Lloco Camp (4700 m.  / 15419ft.)

During our trek, we will cross over two passes, the first with an elevation of (5000 m. / 16404 ft)  and the second with an elevation of 4900 m. / 16076ft  Along the way we will observe the typical fauna and vegetation of the high altiplano.

After around 8 – 9 hours of trekking, we will arrive at our second camp, Maria Llocko (4700 m.  / 15419ft. ). Maria Llocko is a scenic spot at the base of the mighty west face of Huayna Potosi and is where we will make our camp .

This day  hiking time will be 8 – 9 hours  (12 km.)

 

Today our 3  hours trek will take us from the west side of Huayna Potosi and over a pass of (5100 m. / 16732ft ) After crossing over into the next valley we end the trekking at 10:30 am.  the car will  take us  to the base camp of Huayna Potosi (4700m. / 15419ft.). in the afternon we will take a rest and sleep at Base Camp of Huayna Potosi. 

This day  hiking time will be 3  hours  (4 km.)

8:00 am Breakfast, later preparation of the backpacks.
12:00 pm Lunch, then ascent to High Camp (5200 m.a.s.l.) 2 hours of walking.
15:00 pm arrival at High Camp Refuge,
15:15 pm hot drinks to hydrate during the afternoon
17:00 pm Dinner, and night in shelter at High Camp.

 

Our day will begin very early. Wake up time will be around midnight and we will get dressed with the climbing clothing and equipment and have breakfast.  

Around 1:00 AM we will begin the ascent. We will have short breaks to rest and eat chocolates and drink water during the ascent.  

We plan to arrive at the summit around sunrise in order to appreciate the wonderful view of the highlands, the surrounding Cordillera Real, Lake Titicaca, and the ever unique sunrise itself.

Our descent to high camp will take 2 – 3 hours and upon arrival we will have vegetable soup and hot drinks. At the high camp we will re-pack our backpacks and make the 1 hour descent to base camp. 

We usually arrive at our office in La Paz between  1:00 PM. and 2:00pm
