Pequeño Alpamayo is located in Bolivia part of the Condoriri region of the Cordillera Real. The mountain, named after its resemblance to the famed Alpamayo of Peru, is situated among the cirque of peaks that make the region an alpinist’s playground. Among these peaks, Pequeño Alpamayo is noted for it’s aesthetic presence and dramatic lines of ascent, while still being accessible for novice climbers ascending with a professional guide and technical equipment.

Physical Requirements

Climbing Pequeño Alpamayo is physically demanding, as the high altitude. For that reason is recommended for who will climb it. Has a good fitness and acclimatization,  becasuse it will make the climb easier and more enjoyable.

Weather Conditions

 As its high altitude, it is constantly cold all year round, with temperatures dropping below 0 degrees celsius. Most of the time is around – 12 degrees during the climb. For that reason is recomended to climb with suitable equipment.

Best season to climb

 The best season to climb Pequeño Alpamayo is between May and September,  as this is the dry season in Bolivia, and will ensure optimal climbing conditions.

ITINERARY:

    La Paz (11,810 ft./3600 m). to Base Camp (15,419 ft./4700 m) of Pequeño Alpamayo

    8:30 am Meeting at our Office or at the meeting point La Paz - Bolivia 9:00 am we will drive for about 3 hours out of the city and through the Andean highlands until Rinconada (14,7639 ft./4500 m) from where we start the trek. 1:00 pm We will walk 2 hours to reach Base Camp (15,419 ft./4700 m). 3:00 pm Arrival at Base Camp. later free time, during the afternoon to enjoy the view of mountain Condori accompanied by hot drinks. 5:00 pm Dinner and Night in Tents or at Refuge.

    Base Camp (15,419 ft./4700 m) Ascent to the Pequeño Alpamayo Summit (17,814 ft./5430 m) and return to La Paz City.

    1:30 am Wake up, breakfast, and preparation with climbing equipment. 2:30 am Ascent 5 to 6 hours to the top, we start on a fairly flat road until we reach the ice and snow of the glacier. We continue climbing up slopes of up to 30 degrees until we reach Pico Tarija (17,388 ft./5,300 m). After Pico Tarija, we climb the two most difficult slopes with an incline of 45 to 50 degrees for 60 meters and 40 meters respectively. Approximately 8:00 am, After the last steep section, we reach the summit of Pequeño Alpamayo (17,814 ft./5430 m) where we can appreciate the view of the Andean highlands, the Cordillera Real and the subtropics. We stayed on the summit long enough to enjoy the view and take photos. The descent to the base camp will take approximately 3 hours. At the base camp we will eat and rest, later we will pack our backpacks for the walk to Rinconada where our transport awaits us. 17:00 pm We finally arrive at the La Paz City.

PACKING LIST:

To sleep:

  • Sleeping Bag (–10°C to –15°C rating): A high-quality, cold-weather sleeping bag designed to keep you warm during the night.

Backpacks:

  • Daypack (35 liters) – for summit day.
  • Bagpack (55 – 70 liters) or ( duffel bag )– used, from  La Rincoanda to Base Camp to carry all mountaineering gear.  

Headwear:

  • Beanie – should be warm, breathable, and moisture-wicking, made from materials like merino wool or synthetics to keep your head and ears insulated and dry in cold, high-altitude conditions.
  • Buff – A must-have for all outdoor activities
  • Sun Hat – Any style of lightweight hat for shading the head will work well
  • Sunglasses – with strong UV protection
  • Headlamp –A modern outdoor LED headlamp offering 200-300 lumens of output.

Handwear:

  • lightweight liner gloves
  • Insulated mittens or expedition gloves, no worries if you don’t have your own—we provide them.

Clothing (Layered System for High-Altitude Climbing):

  • Base Layer – thermal underwear (top and bottom)
  • Mid Layer – fleece or insulated jacket and pants
  • Outer Layer – waterproof and windproof jacket and pants
  • Down Jacket – for cold summit conditions

Footwear:

  • Socks – Bring three pairs of light–midweight wool hiking socks, plus one heavyweight pair for cold weather.
  • Hiking Shoes – sturdy and broken-in for comfort
  • Mountaineering boots
    • We Recommend to bring your own muntaineering boots, because as you’re already accustomed on them and they will be more comfortable during the climb.
      • However, no worries if you don’t have your own—we provide a suitable pair for you.

Accessories & Essentials:

  • Personal Medication – any prescription or altitude-related meds
  • Toilet Paper – personal supply
  • Personal Hygiene Items – toothbrush, toothpaste, etc.
