Climbing Acotango Volcano
The 3-day option allows you to enjoy and explore more of Sajama National Park at a relaxed pace, without rushing, while also summiting Acotango Volcano (6,052 m / 19,855 ft).
Acotango is a volcano located on the border between Chile and Bolivia, in the Western Cordillera. It is one of the Quimsachatas, which in Aymara means “Three Twins.”
The volcano is part of Sajama National Park, home to other impressive high-altitude peaks such as Nevado Sajama (6,512 m)—the highest mountain in Bolivia—as well as the Payachatas, meaning “Two Twins” in Aymara: Parinacota (6,332 m) and Pomerape, along with beautiful high Andean lagoons.
Acotango is considered the most accessible 6,000-meter summit in Bolivia. It offers a non-technical ascent, making it an excellent introduction to high-altitude mountaineering and an ideal option for acclimatization.
Where do trips to climb Acotango start?
Most trips to Acotango start from La Paz, Bolivia. La Paz is easily accessible by plane and also offers excellent opportunities to train and acclimatize in the nearby Royal Range before the climb.
